Under the patronage of the Justice Network for Prisoners and with funding from the Norwegian People’s Aid organization, an awareness symposium on prisoners’ rights was held in Muthanna Governorate, implemented by the Al-Mawaddah Human Rights Organization, with the participation of 38 individuals from various community groups.
The seminar, held on July 28, 2025, discussed the conditions of prisoners in Iraq according to the international Nelson Mandela Rules. The focus was on the necessity of distinguishing between the accused and the convicted, providing appropriate healthcare, and classifying inmates according to age groups and crimes.
The seminar featured significant interventions, including one from an Iraqi guest from Britain who expressed his happiness with the scene of freedoms in Iraq, and a contribution from Dr. Mitham Al-Hayawi, who pointed out the problems of overcrowding in prisons.
The seminar concluded with recommendations emphasizing the application of international standards, rejecting discrimination, and providing rehabilitation programs for prisoners, calling for greater cooperation between civil society organizations and government entities to improve detention conditions.
