June 26th marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, established to combat and eradicate torture worldwide. As outlined in the UN Convention Against Torture (effective June 26, 1987, after ratification by 20 states), this day holds profound significance for activists and survivors, reminding us that justice remains overdue through four key demands:
-
Eradication of all state-sanctioned torture practices.
-
Prosecution of perpetrators—including those who ordered, executed, concealed, justified, or encouraged torture.
-
Compensation for survivors (both material and moral reparations).
-
Legislation to criminalize torture definitively.
We urgently remind Iraq’s federal and Kurdistan Regional governments to implement UN Human Rights Council recommendations (2010–2025) to uphold these obligations.
