As part of the “Promoting Human Rights in Iraqi Prisons” project, funded by the Norwegian People’s Aid, the Al-Munqidh Human Rights Organization, in cooperation with the Justice Network for Prisoners, conducted a field visit to the Al-Rusafa Third Division Prison in Baghdad on July 29, 2025.
The visiting team was headed by Mr. Kazem Al-Baydani, who led an inspection tour covering various sections of the prison. The visit revealed significant challenges in the medical services provided to inmates, particularly those suffering from serious respiratory diseases. The team also discussed with the prison administration ways to improve complaint mechanisms and ensure effective responses.
During the meeting, the team listened to inmates’ complaints, which highlighted shortages of essential medicines and the absence of medical staff at night. For its part, the prison administration affirmed its readiness to cooperate with human rights organizations to improve services, while pointing out some financial and administrative obstacles it faces.
This activity is part of a series of visits carried out by the organization in partnership with the Justice Network for Prisoners to monitor conditions in Iraqi prisons. A detailed report on this visit will be submitted to the relevant authorities, followed by plans for follow-up visits in the coming months to ensure the implementation of recommendations.
These joint efforts aim to enhance prisoners’ rights and improve their detention conditions in line with international human rights standards and Iraq’s commitments in this field.
