A Cleanup Campaign at Basra Central Prison: A Step Towards Human Dignity

In a humanitarian step aimed at promoting the rights of female inmates and improving their detention conditions, the women’s section of Basra Central Prison witnessed a comprehensive cleanup campaign on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

This initiative, carried out by the Al-Taqwa Association for Women’s and Children’s Rights with support from ‘ Justice Network for the Prisoners, and donated by NPA  is part of a project to improve the conditions of Iraqi prisons. During the campaign, the section was supplied with its first shipment of the necessary cleaning equipment, tools, and materials.

The campaign’s work began with notable cooperation, as the prison management team actively contributed to its success, alongside representatives from the Human Rights Commission, the Family and Child Protection Department, the Medical Professionals Syndicate, a number of private sector companies, and psychological support specialists.

The female inmates enthusiastically engaged in cleaning their rooms and common hallways, a symbolic step to enhance their sense of responsibility and positive participation. To ensure their privacy, photography inside the section was prohibited.

The campaign was not limited to the practical aspect alone; it also included an awareness session presented by a medical specialist, which focused on the importance of personal hygiene, methods for combating lice using the distributed materials, in addition to effective sterilization techniques.

These integrated efforts between official institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector resulted in the campaign’s distinct success, confirming that cooperation is the path towards securing a more humane environment that respects dignity within detention centers.

حملة نظافة في سجن البصرة المركزي: خطوة نحو كرامة الإنسان

في خطوة إنسانية تهدف إلى تعزيز حقوق النزيلات وتحسين ظروف احتجازهن، شهد سجن البصرة المركزي – قاطع النساء، يوم الأربعاء الموافق 10 سبتمبر 2025، حملة تنظيف شاملة. جاءت هذه المبادرة، التي نفذتها جمعية التقوى لحقوق المرأة والطفل بدعم من شبكة عدالة السجناء، , وبتمويل منظمة مساعدات الشعب النرويجي  كجزء من مشروع تحسين أوضاع السجون العراقية. وتم خلال الحملة تزويد القسم بأولى شحنات المعدات وأدوات ومواد التنظيف اللازمة. وانطلقت أعمال الحملة بتعاون ملحوظ، حيث ساهم فريق إدارة السجن بشكل فاعل في إنجاحها، إلى جانب مشاركة ممثلين عن مفوضية حقوق الإنسان، وقسم حماية الأسرة والطفل، ونقابة المهنيين الطبيين، وعدد من شركات القطاع الخاص، بالإضافة إلى مختصين في الدعم النفسي. وانخرطت النزيلات بحماس في تنظيف غرفهن والممرات المشتركة، في خطوة رمزية لتعزيز شعورهن بالمسؤولية والمشاركة الإيجابية. وحرصًا على خصوصيتهن، تم الالتزام بعدم التصوير داخل القسم. ولم تقتصر الحملة على الجانب العملي فحسب، بل شملت أيضًا جلسة توعوية قدمتها أخصائية طبية، ركزت على أهمية النظافة الشخصية وطرق مكافحة القمل باستخدام المواد الموزعة، بالإضافة إلى أساليب التعقيم الفعّالة. هذه الجهود المندمجة، بين مؤسسات رسمية ومنظمات مجتمع مدني وقطاع خاص، أسفرت عن نجاح متميز للحملة، مؤكدة أن التعاون هو السبيل نحو تأمين بيئة أكثر إنسانية واحترامًا للكرامة داخل مراكز الاحتجاز.
