Within the framework of the project “Improving Human Rights in Iraqi Prisons,” the Justice Network for Prisoners in Iraq (JNP), in cooperation with the Health Hope Campaign teams, and with the support of Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), implemented three integrated activities in the Hilla Reformatory Prison for Women in Babil Governorate, on 2 September 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

First: Psychological Support Lecture<\/span>
\nDr. Wadad Salman Alwan, one of those experienced in psychological and community support systems, delivered a specialized lecture focused on enhancing the psychological well-being of the female inmates, addressing strategies for coping with reality and planning for the future. She also provided special psychological consultations for some cases. Despite challenges represented by hysterical and nervous episodes among some of the inmates, and their desire to express themselves all at once, these were handled through persuasion, containment, and coordination with the prison administration. The activity received positive interaction that exceeded expectations, and the inmates demanded that it be repeated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second: The Guidance Lecture<\/span>
\nIn response to a request from the prison administration, a guidance lecture was organized targeting the enhancement of the female inmates’ self-confidence and the reduction of their problems. It addressed their role in society and mechanisms for dealing with psychological pressures and reducing negative thoughts, in addition to enhancing their opportunities to engage in social work.<\/span><\/p>\n

Third: Legal Consultations<\/span>
\nIn coordination with the Bar Association in Babil, lawyer Buraq Shaker Kazim Awad visited the prison and provided specialized legal consultations to 11 female inmates, covering criminal and civil cases, introducing them to legal concepts and procedures, and raising their awareness of their legal and health rights. The activity resulted in the activation of some judicial procedures, despite the challenges of limited time, the prison administration’s oversight, and the unavailability of the required documents for some of the inmates.<\/span><\/p>\n
